My dad said he would look in to some music lessons at school or elsewhere for me but I’m not sure what I’d like to play. It’s either guitar, drums or bass guitar. I thought about guitar because I’d be able to practise at home but then I thought I’m not exactly great at reading music. I didn’t do too well in keyboard assessments in Year 7 at school but I’d be more than willing to learn. Then I thought drums but I can’t fit a drum kit anywhere BUT I would be more likely to be better at drums. What should I do? I’m in to metal/screamo bands like Your Demise, Parkway Drive, Asking Alexandria, Deez Nuts and Pierce the Veil btw.

well, electric guitar is for the centre of attention
the bassits is usually the hottest
the drummer is the one people would like to be after.

i’d say the drums, if you have the space. i played bass myself, but i gave it up. i now really want to play the drums!

  3. The Irish Spaniard says:

i agree w/ jacob. play bass.

Bass in metalcore is really easy so you might wanna start out with bass like I did, then if you get into nu metal it gets more challenging (although you will need a 5 string bass for that, as Korn. Limp Bizkit etc. use 5 string basses and their bassists, Fieldy and Sam Rivers, are awesome bassists). Guitar is more complicated as you need to learn chords and most metalcore bands tune down to drop A#/Drop G# so tuning can be a bit complicated. That said once you get there, if you prefer rhythm guitar to lead, you don’t have to worry about chords and solos as much, as rhythm is more reliant on “power chords” which are much easier to learn. If you can get some space in your garage, try drums but you need quick feet and loose wrists, as metalcore uses double bass drums/kick pedals which isn’t as popular in other genres but is always seen there, and blastbeats are common which are played very quickly.

Or you could just get singing lessons to learn how to do screamed vocals.
