Guitar Songs: How Long Will It Take To Play The Guitar?

taken from the DVD “A Night of Extravagant Worship” available at Directed by Carey Goin

I have recently started to self teach myself at guitar and can play a few cords and songs. how long before I start to feel as though I’m actually playing the guitar as opposed to playing ‘at it’?

It depends how fast you learn :) but seriously, if you commit yourself to it and practice hard, get some help, it may only take a few months to get the basics down.

  2. BlakeSK says:

I started playing guitar about 2 years ago. I was just taught to read “tabs.” As of now I feel I’ve come light-years from what I was when I started. However I play a lot, at least three hours a day. So, to answer your question depending on how much you play, I would say around a year or so. Maybe even before that. Good luck.

Let’s face it, in order to be good at anything it takes time, practise and knowledge.

The time and practise will allow you to be able to play the chords and change between different chords with total fluency. This also allows time for your muscles to have a memory of how to play a chord and you’ll find that you are doing things without thinking about them.
The knowledge will allow you to play in whatever key and mode and hoe to add riffs and breaks to your playing.

All this takes time and although it seems a long time, it could be a year until you can just pick up a guitar and play without having to work it all out first.

    Wishing you all the best.
