I play guitar and sing. I’ve been recording myself on Audacity using a single cheap USB mic. Very basic setup.
Friends say that the recordings didn’t capture my voice well so I just bought a Shure PG58 and a XLR to USB adaptor. The mic works fine but I’m now realising I really need 2 mics, one for the vocal and one to pick up the acoustic guitar. If I plug in a second USB mic, Audacity only seems to pick up one of them. I’m not sure if this is a limitation of the sound card or the software, or something I can fix with the right settings.
I’ve also read that most people use a mixer for multi-track recording. I’d prefer not to buy any more gear so is a mixer absolutely required? What else is needed for multi-tracking? Any other advice much appreciated :)

My boyfriends dad has his 50th birthday coming up and he’s asked his son to play at this party.?

M-Audio Support: www.m-audio.com Lets bring in one of the Pro Tools Essential Loops to the Drums track. Go to the Window Menu and select Workspace. Click the search button, type Essential Loops, and press Enter. Double-click the Pro Tools Essential Loops folder. You can click the triangles to open the folders; and you can click the speaker icon to audition loops. Make sure this metronome icon is green so the loops will be matched to the tempo of your song. Find one you like and then drag and drop the file to the left of the Drums track in the Edit Window. Drop it on the far left so the audio begins at the start of the track AND on beat. You can easily make this loop repeat by duplicating it. The loop should already be selected; if not, come up here and select this hand tool, click an empty spot to make sure nothing is selected, and then click the loop to select it. Press Ctrl + D (or Cmd+D on a Mac) to duplicate the region. In Pro Tools you can use the spacebar to start and stop playback. Go ahead and audition the loop. Lets go prepare to record some audio. Switch back to the mixer by pressing Ctrl + = (or Cmd + = on Mac). Ive got a guitar hooked up to the ¼ guitar input on the Fast Track. Im going to click to record enable the rhythm guitar track. If you have a microphone hooked up and want to record your voice, or if you want to use a mic to record an acoustic guitar or guitar amplifier, click to record enable the Mono Audio track on the right. Play your guitar or sing

So yeah, I was thinking that as he likes my singing and my boyfriend can play the guitar, i thought it’d be a good idea to have him play a song and me sing it for his dad on his 50th but it’s choosing a song that’s the hardest.

Just things you may need or want to know to help you choose…

-his fathers birthday’s in May
-me and my boyfriend will have been together for nearly 2 years
-i’d like an acoustic version or an orginal acoustic song either sang in a high mans voice which is easy for a female to sing or a song that’s sung by a female.
-nothing too long, a song that lasts the usual song length so 3 – 4 minutes.
-it’d probably be dedicated for him by his son so a father and son song rather than a love song.
-a slowish song would be good rather than a club or trance sort of song. if it’s a rock or heavy metal song, that’s fine as long as it’s slow like BFMV – all these things i hate.

links would be good but just the artist/band and name of record would be just perfect.

thanks guys :)

Recording Acoustic Guitar: The D Minor Blue Scales?

Acoustic guitar player ECM recording artist Ralph Towner plays a live solo (The name of the tune is “Toledo”).

Hi

I am learning guitar, and at the moment the acoustic version of Clapton’s Layla.

Now I know that the basic chord structure is Dm Bd C Dmm, and I want to solo over that (beyond the tabs solo form the live recording for MTV), should I be using the Dm Blues scales and if so whats the difference between that and say the D Pentatonic scale?

What I meant I guess is what the difference between the D and D minor scales, or is it the same thing?

I can’t actually find the D minor blues scales charts?

thanks

Recording Acoustic Guitar: You Know The Levels That The Frequencies Should Be Adjusted?

Rose Room was one of the first studio tunes recorded 2 October 1939 by guitarist Charlie Christian after he joined the Benny Goodman Sextet. I love this and other Goodman small group tracks as they are a good introduction to jazz and swing. They are popular circa forties’ era tunes, with members taking melodic solos that can be appreciated against the chord changes. These tracks initially helped me ‘get’ jazz, rather than being scared off by some of the less user friendly forms of it. This song was also important in helping Charlie join Goodman’s group. The story goes that Charlie sat in unannounced with Goodman’s group at a live performance at the Victor Hugo restaurant in Los Angeles on 16 August 1939, at the instigation of producer John Hammond, who had been hearing about Charlie’s electric guitar work in Oklahoma City. (Apparently Goodman had not shown much interest in Charlie when he had auditioned briefly on acoustic guitar at a recording session earlier that day). According to Wikipedia, ‘displeased at the surprise, Goodman called “Rose Room”, a tune he assumed that Christian would be unfamiliar with. Unknown to Goodman, Charles had been reared on the tune, and he came in with his solo — which was to be the first of about twenty, all of them different, all unlike anything Goodman had heard before. That version of “Rose Room” lasted forty minutes; by its end, Christian was in the band. In the course of a few days, Christian went from making .50 a night to making

Recording Acoustic Guitar: Any Songs About Leaving; For When I Leave Home To Afghanistan?

Tommy explains the placement and type of mics he uses when recording to get his favoured “fat tone”. Short instrumental at end. All things Tommy at www.tommyemmanuel.com/

I’m in search of songs I can record myself singing for my girlfriend whilst I’m in Afghanistan – telling her I miss her, I’m coming home soon or anything along those lines.

This does mean a lot to me so I’m desperate for a list of songs that I could play (acoustic guitar) and sing for her to hold onto whilst I’m away.
Marusu, I appreciate your reply but you’re not making this any easier for me – there will always be war; the military is what protect you, your family and mine. War’s a horrible thing, nobody can disagree with that; but the men who chose to risk their lives and liberty are real heroes.

Recording Acoustic Guitar: Advise On What Microphone To Choose?

Andrew and Bobby of Jack’s Mannequin perform “Restless Dream” acoustically from their album People and Things. Filmed and recorded by Ryan Perez.

I am a singer from Essex, Southend, and have been doing a few little gigs, if you want to call them that, for old peoples homes/ retirement homes etc. with my mate who plays acoustic guitar, who is very good!

We only do it for the pure enjoyment of performing, but realised that we could make something of it after a few people, who have contacts in the music industry, suggested we record a few songs in a local studio and send them to them so they can see if we can get anywhere.

Keeping that in mind, we want to carry on performing but the microphone i have isn’t very good and would just like a new and good quality mic. Could anyone suggest a good one? preferably wireless.

Thank you :)

I just downloaded Audacity 1.2.6
//audacity.soundforge.net//
Seems like a good deal just for messing around as it’s
free.
Problem is, it’s imposible to use the effects in real
time. One has to record a track/s before adding the
effect, and as I’m still a lousy guitar player its
really depressing playing a flat acoustic guitar( Via
the Edirol UA-20 mic input) with out effects.
(Delay/reverb/chorus. ect.)
I’ve tried using Audio Hijack for the sound effects
‘before’ going to Audacity… it does work via the
headphone/speaker “out” on the UA-20, but wont record
the effects into audacity…. they come out flat again
on playback….Back to square one. Any idea’s ?.

What do I need – Or do I need anything?

Various studio recording techniques for upright bass. Steve Bailey takes you into his studio and demonstrates conventional as well as unconventional miking techniques

I write, play and have recorded some songs, but I’m not sure if they need more, or are they ok in the basic form they are in. It’s just me and an acoustic guitar. Please check them out and tell me what you think I should add, or if I should just leave them like they are.

Am I brave or just a child?
Feels like in breaking up inside
To lose her makes me feel such pain
I’ll never see my mother’s eyes again

I go to the places that we used to run
When I was five and we had such fun
Now they seem cold with their solemn trees
You wrapped the sunshine all around me

I wonder why, you had to leave me
So young and naive, still needing protecting
The house is quiet; I swear I still hear you singing
Hush baby don’t you cry, mama’ll sing you a lullaby.

Winter showers, drumming on the roof
You’d sing along and my soul would soothe
Now it sounds empty as I sit out in the rain
I’ll never hear my mother’s voice again

I look at pictures of you, and I see me
Laughing proud, how you used to be
But there will be no more pictures of your smile
That thought, its makes me cry. That thought, it makes me cry

I wonder why, you had to leave me
So young and naive, still needing protecting
The house is quiet; I swear I still hear you singing
Hush baby don’t you cry, mama’ll sing you a lullaby.

Am I brave or just a child?

Hi, I am a 14 year old singer-songwriter also plays acoustic guitar, and the stuff I write is apparently really amazing, I think it’s really good as well without being a showoff…My mum wants to take me to a real recording studio, but we have an 8-track at home where I record most of my songs, and am going to put them on my myspace in half term after the exams, (would have done it ages ago, but couldn’t figure out the microphone, so tried recording ont laptop but wouldn’t work), anyway, I live in Lancashire and am doing GCSE music, and then am gonna go on to do music a-level at clitheroe royal grammar or runshaw college, but after that I am supposed to go to LIPA but it recently lost funding…it’s really good and all but the brit school is better and I think I could get in. It’s free, but the thing is the distance from home. If I got in, how could I solve the fact that London is so long away, and living there is MEGA expensive. PS I get some help from Diana Vickers and Charlotte O’connor who I know…

Recording Acoustic Guitar: Does Anybody Know Any Good Recording Studios That Offer A Great Service?

I mean add extra instruments at no extra cost, or minimal cost. Able to book any day of the week. Are based around south east england, or accessible from there. Produce good quality recordings. etc. My music is mainly acoustic and I would like strings, bass, drums, electric guitars, piano maybe added. Any help?

How do I get out of this ‘wanting to be a musician’ trap?

The problem I have is what I am going to do with my life. The only thing I can think of is something to do with writing or music. I honestly believe that music is what I am here to do – I also recognise I may have made myself believe that to be true. I feel really stupid and unrealistic even having it as a goal! I often feel it will never happen, but then I cant do anything else, like it would be impossible for me not to constantly think about it! At the moment I am not doing anything at all towards it. The problem is I have really bad stage fright and I dont have any kind of backup plan for my future. I tell people I have a job as a music therapist but its not true, I have lied to my girlfriend, my family and everyone I know.

The last few years have been spent recording and playing at open mic nights – which I now have this horrible love/hate relationship with. Before performances I feel such an unbelievable fear, sometimes having to leave and go home, sometimes freezing on stage and playing really badly, sometimes pretending to talk on my phone so I don’t have to speak to anyone. Often at these I would just play the same 3 songs over and over again week in week out, as I was so scared of trying something different, atleast I knew roughly how well they would be received. I would always go on my own, keeping it all completely secret from my girlfriend and family, I did this because of 2 absolutely terrible performances I did for my girlfriend and her friends, I don’t even know if they were that bad but they have stayed strongly in my mind. I felt like such a strange awkard person with an acoustic guitar I couldn’t play particulary well, I had no real context. I feel I am constantly led to focus on music, but then why cant I find a clear way through.

My actual recording sessions have been ecstatic [as have a handful of performances] which is why I know I will never be able to rest unless I have some kind of hand in. If I had only known awful performances then it would be easy – I would simply be able to leave it alone and do something else instead – but some of the times I played – including the first time – have been the greatest, most breathtaking nights of my life, which is why I will never be able to give up on it completely. The fact of how I felt during those times means I cant leave it alone – it will torture my mind constantly unless I do something with it. I simply cannot do anything else. I hope you can see what a trap I have put myself in [how the human mind works!] If anyone has any kind of advice I would really appreciate it!!

I have basically spent the last few years writing songs, all the time for 12 hours a day, I quit university and everyone presumed I was still going there, and now that the course has ended and the people I started with are getting their degrees, while I have not achieved anything, I fell into the worst depression of my life. As the course ended I told everyone I had left uni due to illness and had landed a fairly good job. I don’t feel on the same professional level as other members of my family. I can’t just carry on writing songs anymore, something had to change! I know that sick of lying about my job, always having to do the same description to everyone I meet of what my job entails, ITS ONE BIG MASSIVE LIE! I don’t know how to get out of it.
I swear on my life I don’t know how to get out of this trap, if I start telling the truth to everyone then I will have to either get a job or go to uni again, neither of which are suitable. I feel guilty about just going home when I tell my girlfriend I am going to work, but I know I will never be satisfied unless I am involved in music, but I am trapped because I absolutely hate promoting myself.
I don’t even know if these recording are any good to justify the time. I am currently trying loads of new things, many of which are new ways of creating and recording music, promotion, image etc – I feel if I keep trying new things then one thing will click. I now recognise the importance of playing a part in a social group to diminish fears. It is definitely more difficult to perform without being in a context.

When I met my girlfriend in 2003 everything was perfect, I was performing really well and we fell in love, I had so much confidence, I was going somewhere, I could feel it in the air, 5 or more years have passed and I feel lost. What I don’t realise is that those days do no deserve to be championed in a way that it could never be as good now.

An old friend has a band thats become very successful, with a tour of america, I went to see them alone, I wanted their success to motivate me but it did not work at all and I felt stuck and desperately unhappy again. I am also trapped by the idea I could never start my own band, I feel compleltely jaded and uninspired by the idea, so if I do anything then I will genuinly do it alone. Only today I heard someone else I know on the radio, it compleltely feels like musi
