Get some lessons. That way your learning will be structured and your mistakes and be corrected. Many people successfully teach themselves with a Learn to Play Guitar book but this takes more drive and determination.

Well your first thing will definitely be getting a guitar. You can usually get pretty cheap deals with FirstAct or Ibanez, but if you want something that’ll last you a little while, Fender, Epiphone, and Taylor will be the best choice. Nowadays, Youtube guitar lesson videos could be of real help when it comes to basics like technique and playing the instrument, to scales and strumming patterns. Also, look up chord charts and learn how to read tab. There are a bunch of sites that will walk you through step by step on reading tab and music. I could also give you lessons as well if you’d like for free. Just shoot me an email and I’ll be glad to help. Best of luck!
